The next day of the Houston Trip

On Saturday we checked out of the hotel and went down to the Johnson Space center. I had always been curious about it, and I thought it was something I couldn't leave Texas without going to visit. It turned out to be really awesome. The first big visitors area is akin to a children's museum, except it's all about space. They have a lot of interactive things.
This is a game where kids can pretend to be in mission control. The girls are compter geeks, so they really liked this exhibit.
They had a real museum part where you could walk through things that had actually been in outerspace. Above is a picture of Lyla in the old space station. I couldn't believe how tiny come of the first space capsules were. One of them they said was akin to riding in a phone booth on it's side. I can't imagine being in a space that tiny for such a long period of time.
This was a display of all of the equipment that first went to the moon. They also had the moon rover thing. But that picture really didn't turn out.
One thing you could do was to take a tram ride into the actual NASA area and see the space program up close. The space center is much like a military base with lots of different buildings, housing, and stores and everything. This was a huge huge warehouse-like building with mock shuttles and modules used for training. There was no training going on when we were there because it was Saturday, but usually you can go and watch what they are doing. We got to see the big Japanese arm attachment thing that they had been training with and the space shuttle discovery just brought it up to the space station about a week ago. Kindof cool that we got to see it up close.
None of my picture of this turned out reall well, but this was the girls' favorite part of the whole deal. A giant space-themed play place. I think the space station was awesome, and well worth the trip if any of y'all are ever in Houston, you should go there.
